Explanation of Instructional Material
Every aspect of music works together and contributes to the overall ability of any musician. For this reason, I include the study of repertoire, technique, sight reading, theory, ear training, ensemble playing, music history, memorization, expression, performance, and listening for every student, and composition and improvisation for those who show interest.
Even if piano is not the ultimate musical goal you have for yourself or your children, the basic skills and techniques learned from piano lessons will prove useful in many areas of life - musical and otherwise.
Repertoire
Each student will study a broad variety of repertoire. While I do find it acceptable to focus much of the repertoire on the student's main area of interest, all students will be introduced to, exposed to, and encouraged to master many different styles of music.
Technique
It is the mastery of technique which will allow the student to move freely and with ease around the keyboard. A beautiful tone is also attributed to good technique. To ensure that this happens, the student will be assigned to practice technical exercises and apply them in the playing of all repertoire.
Sight Reading
Good sight reading skills allow the student to master new repertoire more thoroughly and carefully. To help achieve this vital skill, students will be assigned to practice sight reading and/or flashcards every day.
Theory
Studying music theory is like studying the alphabet when one learns to read. Theory is the building blocks upon which all music is founded. The study of theory gives students the "big picture" behind music and allows them to play with more understanding, confidence, intelligence, and interpretation. The study of theory also consistently leads to better sight reading, memorization, and performance. Each student will learn theoretical concepts through programs in the computer lab and will also be assigned various theory activities to complete each week.
Ear Training
Ear training gives the student the opportunity to connect the theory of music with the sound of music. It helps to fill in the blanks of the musical big picture I am attempting to develop in each student's mind. Students will be given the opportunity to practice ear training through programs in the computer lab and through certain group classes.
Ensemble Playing
Each student will be given the opportunity to play duets with myself or another student several times throughout the year. Playing with another musician is a learned art that must be stressed in piano study just as it is stressed in the study of almost all other instruments. This is an area of study in which most students find great enjoyment!
Music History
It is important that all musicians have at least a basic understanding of the story of the development of music. This helps to cultivate a greater appreciation and love for music in general. Each student will be exposed to music history through programs in the computer lab and by utilizing resources from my studio library.
Memorization
Memorization is a skill that comes easier to some students than others. For most, it is a learned skill that must be practiced. Playing a piece of music by memory allows the student to give themselves fully to the expression, interpretation, and emotion of music without the hindrance of thinking about individual notes on a piece of paper. Each student will be educated in memorization methods and will be given opportunities to practice these methods.
Expression
Music has often been called the speech of angels. It reaches into depths that words cannot and communicates to the innermost workings of the heart, soul, and mind. Students will be encouraged to carefully consider the message they are communicating with their music.
Performance
Students will be given the opportunity various times throughout the year to practice sharing their music with grace, confidence, and dignity.
Listening
Students will be exposed to a wide variety of music through listening assignments every week. They will be assigned to fill out a worksheet which will help them to listen with intelligence and awareness.
Composition and Improvisation
For those students who show special interest, a study of composition and/or improvisation will be included.
